Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Redesigned Site to Launch Soon
One of my stops at the recent SHRM conference was to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics’ exhibitor booth. For those of you not familiar with BLS, they are the principal fact-finding agency for the federal government in the broad field of labor economics and statistics. The site is an important resource for finding out all kinds of information, from the national unemployment rate to state and county wages. Find out more.
I started chatting up one of the women at the booth, and when she asked me for feedback about the site, I couldn’t hold back. I told her that I found them to be an invaluable source of information, but that it was often difficult to navigate through their site and was consequently quite time-consuming to find the information I needed.
I expected her to react negatively, but instead she lit up (although it could have been the harsh lighting in the room) and looked delighted to hear it. I was confused, until she led me over to a computer screen and told me that after getting much similar customer feedback about the site, they were planning a redesign launch. She told me that the site should be much cleaner and more easy to use and navigate in the future. I was excited. (Yes, about labor statistics.) I was able to preview an online presentation of the redesigned site, set to go live on July 21st.
Highlights of the changes to include:
*Fresh content on the homepage daily
*Improved search engine
*Resources tailored by visitor category (business leaders, consumers, teachers, investors, policy makers, job seekers, members of the media, and survey respondents will have a resource page tailored to their particular interests)
*Tutorials – Audio, video, and text help for various site tools will now be available to users
