Oh, Dear! Get a Free T-Shirt From CareerBuilder

By now, you’ve all seen the CareerBuilder Big Game commercial…right?

Well, we’ve made our favorite koala (Is he British? Is he Australian? We don’t really know) into a minor celebrity and put his likeness on some limited-edition T-shirts. This is where you come in.

We want to know what you’re doing in the face of our current recession. There’s been a heap of negativity in the media lately, and we (as we suspect you do too) want to hear about the good things going on in businesses across the nation and around the world. Do you have a story to share about something your business has learned recently? A way that you’ve become more innovative? A great thing you’re doing to lift employee morale?

Share in the comments section below and tell us about it. What’s in it for you, you ask? Possibly one of these:

koala

We will accept comments through Friday, Feb. 27th and we’ll randomly pick 10 winners to score a free T-shirt.

Eager to develop a deeper relationship with our beloved coffee-drinking, eucalyptus-munching friend? Become a friend of the CareerBuilder Koala on Facebook or purchase your own Koala gear.

As with many companies, we have had to reevaluate our benefits package and revise some of our benefits in an effort to save money across the company. While some benefits were reduced we were also able to negotiate and add some benefits (like critical illness insurance, identity theft assistance, travel protection, Healthy Rewards program and a Will Preparation Program). This helped to soften the blow of reducing some other benefits. Because of these benefit changes, the savings enabled our company to keep our annual merit increase in tact. At the time we announced these benefit changes, our CEO sent out a letter (state of the union) to reassure our employees of the company’s commitment to our employees while still keeping the company profitable. Employees appreciated hearing directly from the CEO and are very excited that they still get their annual raises.

Everyone -- I just wanted to say thanks for sharing all of these great ideas! It's interesting to learn about what companies such as yours are actually doing right now -- and I imagine really helpful for others looking for ways to lift employee morale or try something new in these economic times. Thank you all!

Another shot to score a limited-edition T-shirt coming soon...

I cut coupons and print online coupons for groceries and fast food places. The whole team at work shares and we use what the others can't! Good teamwork saves a few dollars!
I love the tee!

We have taken the approach with our team member's, that we do not have an Economy problem . We have told our employees that the media can only sell negative so with that said Dan R's Automotive has thier own ecomomy and economic program's.Dan R's Automotive stimulus package is to turn off the media , turn on the POSITIVE!. Show love , committment, compassion with our clients and we will be rewarded many times over.We hold monthly potlucks where we do a theme like st.patricks day bring in something that starts with a G for green. In this world all belongs to God - The only thing that we OWN outright is our ATTITUDE - Make the best of it. Thanks for listening Dan Reichow

There are alternative ways to show your employees how much you appreciate them - especially in light of these tough financial times.

We were unable to give out holiday bonus/gifts this year and cannot raise salaries at this time. We did a holiday drawing and gave several prizes of a half day off with pay. (Who wouldn't like to leave early on a Friday, or sleep late on a Monday)... This did not cost the company extra cash, but made the staff happy.

We do a monthly potluck luncheon as well.

We will be doing the day off/half day off again for nurses week.

A professor once told me that your employees are dissatisfied or they are not. If they are, all the money in the world would not help... they just want to know they are appreciated. Say thanks, praise them and if you need to discipline them - do it quickly and than let it go.

Although the economy has hit home, we try to apply the FISH! philosophy in our organization- the mission of our "FISH Commission" team is to keep employee moral up. It doesn't have to be expensive, just ramdom and thoughful can mean more. For example, picking a day to make popcorn for the whole organization and bring it around to everyone as a late afternoon snack. And random appreciation cards along with a treat or small gift. Employees love it and feel appreciated!

As the HR Manager, I wanted to focus on our employees and do so through a monthly newsletter as well as a monthly celebration. I ask for volunteers and together we create a great diversion from the economics to boost morale. I encourage all of my employees to voice their concerns, opinions and ideas in a confidential e-mail to HR. I remain positive and its translate to all of my employees!

Our company recently started a "Lunch In" program where we teamed up with a local deli to have 'economically friendly' lunches provided. We wanted to offer something to our employee’s that is affordable, convenient as well as delicious! With the Lunch-In program there are sandwiches and soups to choose from all for $5. And they are delivered to the office, so the employees don't even have to leave the building!

Our company has about 60 employees and we just completed our benefits open enrollment period. We were able to offer the employees different health care coverage at a lower premium. The company was able to cover the increase in dental which means no increase for the employees. We also added a new Vision plan this year. Since some of the copays went up on the new plans the premium went down so we offered a FSA plan this year to help cut off-set the difference.
We have also maintained our celebrations like Pot-luck luncheons, Family pinic, Bowling night, etc to keep morale up.
We are planning a communication for all employees from the President as well.

We are in the Service Bussiness. Recently I was meeting with a customer and discussing the econmy and the negative spin the media is putting on everything that happens! This made me begin to think about what we could do to make a difference. This is where the tell me something that happend positive in your day motto came from. When my Customer Service Mgr. meet daily with our customer service Reps. the 1st question they ask is tell me something positive that happpend in your day the results have been great. Revenue has rissen 6% over previous month! The overall goal is to take this to our customer and hope that the positive approach leads to positive results!

We have recently expanded our office and have opened two new offices in different states, which created more opportunities for several people. Our company also realizes the importance of employee satisfaction and does everything it can to achieve that. Everyone in the company still received their annual raises and we kept our excellent benefit packages despite not having a great year.

My HR department recently had us complete an employee survey so we can all speak our minds anonymously...and I did. They also sent out a mini-survey asking how we can be more green.

P.S. I deserve a t-shirt because I swear I am the inspiration behind the commercial.

Our company, as many others, have been struggling with the question of downsizing. We cut raises for the time being but will give generous gift cards through out the year to each employee. We are a very small company (26 employees). We have also cut some of our positions from full time to part time, same pay. It seems to be working out great! Although they may not have as much in their paychecks, they still have a paycheck and seem to enjoy the time off as well. They have been promised to go back to full time once things start to turn around.

In light of all the talk regarding Economic Stimulus, our bank put together our own "Stimulus Package" for our employees. Each employee is receiving a cute bag that contains stimulus items, such as energy bars, flavored coffee & tea bags, gold chocolate coins, gift certificates, etc... We feel it's important to keep humor and a good outlook in tact :)

We are also in the processing of putting together a stimulus package for our external cutomers!

My company recently expanded by adding 24 addition seats to our Call Center, turning 14 positions into 38! This has been a major impact on quite a few employees who were struggling to find a job to apply for, not to mention even interview with. With the extra abilities available by having addition employees... business is better than ever! We are able to reward our co-workers, intead of cutting pay. We are also able to create hope in many individuals in our community that see us growing, not failing! In the light of this "recession" I hope more companies extend the hope of "moving forward" instead of the more common "back pedalling" thats most prominant today.
