To stir up buzz for its upcoming “Tornado Week”, the Weather Channel is recording its interns sitting in the middle of “a Twitter powered tornado” – and livestreaming it. The winds grow stronger with every public mention of #TornadoWeek on Twitter, and if the hashtag reaches 1,000,000 mentions, the Weather Channel promises to “turn up the wind for a full blown EF-5 tornado inside the Weather Channel offices!” Ha ha…ha?
One could argue that The Weather Channel is torturing its poor employees for a marketing gimmick, but from the looks of the livestream above, the interns seem to be having fun with it. (Although I cringe to imagine what a similar promotion for Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” might look like.)
What are your thoughts? Innovative way to keep employees engaged or needless intern torture? What do you imagine these interns will walk away from their experience at The Weather Channel thinking about the company? Is this something you’d ever try at your organization?
Now that #TonadoWeek has ended, the above video – which featured a live feed of the The Weather Channel interns at work – is no longer active. For an update on a result of the campaign, check out the recap video here:
