Meet our featured professional this month: Dennis Laughlin, recruiting/delivery manager at DISYS, an IT staffing and consulting company. What makes you a unique recruiter among others with similar skills?
Throughout the 17 years that I have been recruiting, I have always stood by one philosophy: “Do what you say you are going to do.” Some recruiters can lack follow-through on what they tell a potential candidate. The single action of not doing what you say you are going to do has given some of us a bad reputation. I think it’s important to always follow up when you say you will, no matter if the feedback is positive or negative. If you do this, you will build trust; which will in turn lead to the most rewarding sourcing outlet: referrals.
How do you demonstrate passion for your work or your profession?
In my current role as a recruiting/delivery manager at DISYS, I’m responsible for teaching a new generation of recruiters the best practices that have led to my success. I help my current team and the other recruiters at DISYS to help potential consultants find their ideal position through hard work, discipline and honest recruiting activity. I also lead the adoption of technology in my office and push my team to use all technology available to source great candidates.
What are you doing to empower employment?
Every time I speak to a new candidate I ask them what specifically they are looking for in their next opportunity. I ask, “What is the ideal opportunity for your career, and are there any companies you are targeting employment with?” I don’t tell them about the opportunity I have unless it matches their career goals. I do my best to empower the consultant while listening to what is important to each person individually. Through this, the candidate and I build a stronger bond while working together.
Tell us a story about a unique or special placement you made.
In August 2012 I starting working with a consultant from Orlando, FL who had recently purchased a 100-year old farmhouse in Portland, ME, and ideally wanted to relocate. Working with one of DISYS’s larger Fortune 500 clients, we were able to find him a position within 45 miles of Portland so that he could relocate in March 2013 and be reunited with his wife. DISYS helped him achieve a life-changing goal.

CareerBuilder has been a premier partner to DISYS and helps our teams deliver quality talent. I use all the tools CareerBuilder has made available to us including job postings, screening documents, saved searches, the Supply & Demand Portal, and Talent Network. By posting all of the positions we get on CareerBuilder and using the screening questions, we ensure quality candidates to source from. The saved search functions help us identify the freshest talent in the market, and the data portal shares valuable market knowledge about compensation along with available candidates in the marketplace who are actively seeking new employment within a defined skill set.
