Odds are you’re probably off work today. We’re also willing to bet that most Americans will have a hard time if asked to articulate why. After all, Labor Day is sort of the red-headed stepchild in the world of holidays – it’s not as festive as, say, Thanksgiving (though turkeys everywhere will beg to argue otherwise).
But it SHOULD be. After all, it’s a special day to celebrate Americans’ accomplishments in the workplace. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day “constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”
Not only that, when CareerBuilder surveyed more than 3,000 full-time workers in the second quarter of 2013, 3 out of 4 actually said they were happy in their jobs. And that sounds like a good enough reason to celebrate. (Not throw-an-ugly-sweater-party-while-drinking-eggnog festive, though. That can wait till fall.)
