The 10 Self-Employed Occupations with the Biggest Growth

(EMSI) recently took an in-depth look at the state of self-employed workers – those who consider self-employment to be a significant part of their income – and found that while some occupations have dwindled since the recession, others are growing.

The biggest gains in self-employment have been in lower-wage jobs – landscaping workers, maids, personal care aides and photographers; however, several high-wage occupations have made significant gains, most notably market research analysts/specialists, management analysts, and computer occupations such as web developers. If you’re a recruiter or staffing firm professional, these findings indicate ample opportunity to place workers in higher-level positions. Despite the common belief that most self-employed workers are in lower-income positions, more people in these high-wage occupations are looking toward self-employment. Bring these findings to your clients and help them think strategically about their next hiring move. Work with them and find out how you can best meet their needs by asking the following questions:

  1. If you are having trouble filling a permanent role would you consider making it a temporary placement?
  2. What types of positions in your company would be a good fit for temporary workers?
  3. How can temporary workers help your company meet its strategic and financial goals?

Talk to your clients about the benefits using a contingent workforce for their hard-to-fill IT and consulting positions. Utilizing a contingent workforce to fill these open positions can help your clients find placements for these positions and maintain a leaner organization by outsourcing work or hiring independent contractors.
