The 2015 SHRM Annual Conference & Exhibition is nearly here – and us CareerBuilder folks are SO excited that we’re belting out karaoke renditions of J-Hud songs at local bars, checking out networking tips to avoid making things awwwk-ward, doodling sketches of the keynote speakers, strategizing our bathroom and Starbucks breaks (because, you know) and mapping out our fave #SaaSyCB selfie locations.
There’s a lot to take in at SHRM each year – I still have flashbacks of when I painstakingly (and lovingly, I might add) toured the expo hall and wrote up my thoughts on the various vendors. (I was all about the hard-hitting stuff back in ’08). This year, I can’t be at SHRM to bring you “The Best in Eating at SHRM 2015” as I’d planned, so I’ve curated a list of sessions, based on my personal picks and recommendations from various SHRM-goers I trust.
8 Must-See Sessions at SHRM 2015:
1. What CEOs Think About 2015’s Top Workforce Issues
Presenter: Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder | 6/30 at 2:15 p.m.
Matt’s no stranger to SHRM — or to the issues that are important to HR professionals. But how can you get through to your CEO and understand how to affect change within your organization when you’re not even sure what matters to him or her? Matt will talk about how you can more effectivelly address the workforce challenges that are top of mind for your CEO.

2. “Getting the C-Suite’s Attention: Seven Strategies to Transform from HR Leader to Business Leader“
Presenter: Jennifer McClure, CEO of Unbridled Talent | 2 sessions; 6/29 at 2 p.m.; 6/30 at 4 p.m.
And on that note… Jennifer always impresses me with her ability to seamlessly break down issues around the C-Suite and give HR professionals really solid advice about how to bridge the gap that so often exists. She’ll help you walk the walk when it comes to making yourself heard and respected in the eyes of your leaders (and then Matt will brief you the following day on the issues you need to be focused on this year).
3. “Go Inside Facebook’s Strategy to Grow, Innovate and Engage”
Presenters: Bill McLawhon, Head of Executive Development, Facebook and Thuy Sindell, Founder, Skyline Group International | 7/1 at 11:15 a.m.
We’ve talked a lot on The Hiring Site about the importance of investing in your talent — and this sounds like a fantastic opportunity to get the scoop on how an uber-successful company like Facebook uses coaching to drive employee engagement to do just that.
4. “Cultures that Rock!! Five Proven Ways to Develop and Sustain a Phenomenal Workplace”
Presenter: Steve Browne, Executive Director of HR, LaRosas, Inc. | 6/30 at 7 a.m.
Steve has a contagious energy and positive spirit about him, which makes watching him speak fun in and of itself. But he’s also just brimming with ideas and advice around workplace culture and employee morale that just make so much sense — I think this will be a can’t-miss (and hey, he’ll wake you up at 7 a.m.!)
5. “Bambi vs. Godzilla — Dealing with Difficult People: Keys to Empowered Communication”
Presenter: Bruce D. Christopher, psychologist, speaker and humorist | 6/29 at 7 a.m.
I like the sound of this session because dealing with difficult people is something we all grapple with — at any level in our professions, and throughout our careers. And to get a speaker who’s a psychologist, speaker and humorist all rolled into one (during another early-morning session)? Yes please!
6. “We’re Bringing Techy Back!”
Presenters: Tim Sackett, President, HRU Technical Resources and Kris Dunn, Chief Human Resources Officer, Kinetix | 6/29 @ 2 p.m.
Two bright guys with strong personalities and excellent command of a room — who will break down the complexities of HR technology in a no-bull$h#t way, make you laugh, and teach you more than a few things in just over an hour… this would be at the top of my list.
7. “The Leader’s Legacy: Measuring Your Impact on Your Company’s Culture”
Presenter: Mary Faulkner, Head of Talent, Denver Water | 6/29 at 4 p.m.
Mary’s smart as a whip and she’s written about e-learning trends here before — and I think she’ll have a lot of insightful things to say about how a company culture can be driven — or devastated — by a company’s leader. I think she’ll do a heck of a job convincing you to help make the former, not the latter, happen.
8. “Personal Emotional Connections: How Truly Knowing Your People Creates a Highly Engaged Workforce”
Presenter: Jamie Naughton, Speaker of the House, Zappos | 6/29 at 10:45 a.m.
I’m a sucker for a speaker who is from a successful company and wants to share the secrets of keeping employee morale high — without making it cheesy or forced. As a consumer, I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to a grumpy Zappos employee… I’d be interested in taking a look behind the curtain.
