There are so many ways to learn and grow in the recruiting industry. Talent acquisition professionals can participate in everything from webcasts to podcasts to MOOCs, and many of those are free. Even when there’s a cost associated with a development opportunity, more and more companies are investing in training for their workforce.
This includes recruiters.
I am a big fan of conferences as a means to discover new ideas and expand networking opportunities. Here is a roadmap of events to help you develop new skills and increase your professional contacts in 2016.
First Quarter 2016
2016 Executive Forum
February 22-25 in Phoenix, AZ
The Executive Forum North America offers leaders from staffing firms an opportunity to talk about the latest trends and technology. Marcus Buckingham is speaking on building strong teams and accelerating business performance. There’s no better expert in our space. Learn more about the event.
2016 Talent Acquisition Summit
March 10-11 in Dallas, TX
The Talent Acquisition Summit is an opportunity to meet some of today’s best leaders and practitioners. I’m a big fan of Celinda Appleby. She is the global head of digital recruitment and employer brand for Oracle’s Global Talent Acquisition Organization. Celinda will join a large gathering of industry experts to discuss how you can build a better, stronger, faster and more optimized talent acquisition function. Learn more about the event.
2016 SHRM Employment Law & Legislative Conference
March 14 – 16 in Washington, D.C.
At first glance, this SHRM-sponsored event might not seem like a conference for recruiters. I have attended this event several times, and it rocks. Recruiters are at the intersection of work, power, politics and money. We see how companies operate, and we are keenly aware that it’s up to us to indemnify our businesses against risk. This conference will help you be a smarter and more strategic talent acquisition leader. Learn more about thie event.
Second Quarter 2016
April 26 in Long Beach, CA / May 18 in Philadelphia, PA
CareerBuilder is lining up the best talent acquisition leaders who will talk about sourcing, screening and hiring exceptional candidates in the new economy. Along with highly engaging sessions, there will be networking opportunities and product demos. Attendees will also be able to speak with satisfied customers who will share their stories to attendees. Jennifer McClure, our resident expert on executive recruiting and leadership, is excited about the event. She said, “This roadshow is a great way to connect and network. CareerBuilder is offering an opportunity for people to attend a world-class event that doesn’t require budget approval for travel or pricey registration fees.” Sign up for the CareerBuilder Roadshow mailing list to be the first to know about 2016 news and registration.
2016 HCI Strategic Talent Acquisition Conference
May 2-4 in Boston, MA
I believe HCI offers one of the best events focused on talent acquisition on the market. The conference is three days long, and the experience includes everything from recruitment design, branding, social media, sourcing, assessments, technology, analytics, and targeted hiring and design. HCI will help you go beyond the buzzwords and learn from leading practitioners at this truly impressive event. Learn more about this event.
June 7-10 in Chicago, IL
If you’re passionate about college recruiting, join your peers at NACE16 to network with and learn from career services and university recruiting professionals. With a fresh take on everything from college relations to diversity and inclusion, NACE16 offers talent acquisition professionals an opportunity to expand their skills in a variety of meaningful ways. Learn more about this event.
2016 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition
June 19-22 in Washington DC
It’s no secret that the SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition is the largest human resources event in the world. I firmly believe that the recruiting track is one of the best ways for talent acquisition professionals to learn and grow. One of the most impactful ways I learned about topics such as the candidate experience or financial wellness was walking through the expo floor and meeting new vendors who are passionate about tackling work-related issues. Steve Browne is a writer for The Hiring Site and a SHRM board member. He said, “I plan to immerse myself in the conference and talk to HR technology vendors, members and anyone who will listen. As a board member, outreach is my number one goal.” Learn more about this event.
Third Quarter 2016
July 12 in Dallas, TX

CareerBuilder Empower 2016
September 6-8 in Chicago, IL
I hope you can join CareerBuilder and 1000+ other leaders for a talent acquisition experience that blew my socks off last year. The event is laser-focused on identifying opportunities for recruiters to move the industry forward by making recruitment easier and more efficient. Learn more about last year’s event and get excited — 2016 registration opens soon!
Fourth Quarter 2016
2016 HR Technology Conference & Exposition
October 4-7 in Chicago, IL
HR Technology Conference & Exposition isn’t just the world’s biggest conference on human resources and recruitment technology. It also happens to be the best conference, with access to industry market leaders and cutting-edge technology. If you’re a recruiter in a small company, come for the sessions on being scrappy and lean. If you’re part of a large enterprise, stick around and meet with leading CHROs and CTOs who are passionate about the best talent acquisition trends in the market. Dr. Matt Stollak is a human resources professor who writes regularly for The Hiring Site. When I asked him why he likes HR Tech, he said, “Given how poorly HR education around HR technology is done, both on campuses as well as in organizations, a recruiter who can master HR technology would have a significant leg up compared to his or her colleagues.” Learn more about this event.
TechServe Alliance Conference
November 3-5 in Amelia Island, FL
If you’re an IT recruiter, TechServe Alliance is for you. Its premier IT & engineering staffing association is dedicated to advancing excellence and ethics within the IT & engineering staffing and solutions industry. You’ll be offered many opportunities to meet and share best practices with IT and engineering staffing and solutions professionals. Learn more about this event.
Beyond IT and HR technology, the fourth quarter is all about winding down and focusing on year-end activities. There are a series of notable events from your local SHRM councils, SMA chapters, and even podcasts and webcasts from the Harvard Business Review.
