Follow CareerBuilder for Employers on Facebook – You Just Might Become the Proud Owner of an Award Winning Jack in the Box
A few years ago I had the opportunity to attend a two-day corporate training event at the Human Performance Institute. The Institute’s message is all about managing energy – not time – as the key to sustained high performance.
While the information presented was really powerful, the one line that stuck with me all these years was something one of the nutritionists said. She said, “waste or waist,” meaning leftover food can either be wasted or go straight to your waist. Now choose the lesser of the two evils.
Well, “waste or waist” may be applicable for food, but at CareerBuilder, we hate to waste anything. And to my joyful surprise, when I arrived at work today I found 10 pristine CareerBuilder Jack in the Boxes left behind in a dark storage room.
You may not know this, but Jack took home the gold medal in the Special Promotions category of the 2008 BMA Tower Awards. So, needless to say, he’s kind of a big deal, and finding this guy robbed of all of his glory in a dark storage closet was kind of like finding a few extra Emmy statuettes carelessly tossed into the laundry hamper. (Relatively speaking, the Jack in the Boxes are probably more akin to statuettes from the Daytime Emmy’s, but still…) That said, here’s my challenge to you: Help me find this award-winning guy a good home.
What does this mean for you? Well, if you want to be a proud owner of the award winning Jack, simply become a fan of our employer Facebook page, CareerBuilder for Employers AND leave a comment on our Facebook Wall about a topic you’d like us to discuss on Facebook. We’ll choose 10 lucky new followers at random to win. This offer expires Monday September 28 at 5 pm CST. Don’t let our lonely Jacks go to waste!
Facebook fans have the opportunity to receive exclusive info and promotions, as well as interact with fellow fans (and us of course!).

Employers to Maintain Staff Levels in Third Quarter: CareerBuilder and USA TODAY Q3 2009 Job Forecast. Download Full Report.
CareerBuilder and USA TODAY released our Q3 2009 Job Forecast this morning. Most employers expect their staff levels to remain the same as recruiting patterns hold steady and job losses trend downward. Sixty-eight percent of employers don’t anticipate any change in their full-time, permanent headcount in Q3. Fifteen percent expect to increase staff levels. The study also looked at how employers are managing the economic downturn with cost containment measures:

- 10% have instituted mandatory furloughs
- 16% have implemented pay cuts
- 44% have instituted a hiring freeze

Creating a Best Place to Work: Lessons from 2009’s 50 Best Small and Medium Companies to Work for in America
I just sat through a great session at SHRM 2009 given by Michael Burchell, Ed. D., vice president for Global Business Development, Great Place to Work® Institute. In addition to compiling the 50 Best Small and Medium Companies to Work for in America list, the Great Place to Work® Institute is also responsible for assembling the FORTUNE® 100 Best Companies list.
While talking about how a company becomes a best place to work is not a new topic to The Hiring Site, Burchell was able to share some enlightening tips.

SHRM 2009 Day One: Sound Bites and Snack Bites
Day one of SHRM is a wrap! The day’s conference highlight was an opening keynote discussion with Jack Welch, who described HR professionals as his personal heroes. Among the business writer’s other notable soundbites, below are some of my personal favorites:
- HR should be as important as the CFO. How do you do this? Deliver.
- Jack Welch’s tough love advice for HR: Do not be a victim. Make change and impact.
- HR is important in good times but defines a company in bad times.
- The number one thing HR can do to elevate status: raise the bar by developing and training the team.
- Government involvement in corporate bonuses is stupid. Top talent will always follow the money.
- Get voice and communicate like hell. Let people know what’s going on every step of the way.
- See everyone as a teacher around you and take from the best.
- People buy into change because they understand it and know what’s in it for them.
- The only way to win is with creative thinkers and innovation. Act faster and smarter.
- Trust. Earn it everyday.
- There is no such thing as work/life balance, just work/life choices. Make the choices that you are passionate about.
Meanwhile, at the expo, CareerBuilder featured a Top Chef Reception featuring celebrity chefs Brian Malarkey, Casey Thompson and Richard Blais of Bravo TV’s hit reality show “Top Chef“. Check back in the coming days for the recipes for all the delicious treats they prepared.
Were you at the opening day of SHRM? What were your reactions? Anyone get spotted by our secret shopper for wearing your CareerBuilder beads? Don’t forget to check out our virtual SHRM experience site, where we’re constantly adding new video, or stop by and say hello.
