Inspired by Entertainment Weekly’s ode to history’s great “bromances” (which was inspired by today’s release of the new comedy “I Love You, Man“), I decided to pay tribute to another rarely celebrated faux romance: That between manager and employee.

I thought it would be a nice change of pace from the conversations about employer/employee relations that tend to focus on the negative. (And…what can I say? It’s Friday.)

Below are 10 on-screen pairs whose workplace “romances” (womances?) remain completely platonic – despite having all the makings of a true love story:

Mary Richards and Lou Grant (”The Mary Tyler Moore Show”) – The relationship between the producer for WJM-TV and her teddy-bear-on-the-inside boss is fraught with bickering, but underneath it all is an endearing mutual respect that reveals itself at the most unexpected of times.

Sam Malone and Woody Boyd (”Cheers”) - They were no Sam and Diane, but Woody’s wide-eyed innocence was the perfect complement to Sam’s machismo, bringing out his softer side, à la “Beauty and the Beast.”

Murphy Brown and Eldin (”Murphy Brown”) – It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship when Murphy hired the philosophic Eldin to paint her house and, later, be her nanny. Together, Murphy and Eldin, along with her baby, formed an amusing – if controversial – family dynamic.

Ed Rooney and Grace (”Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”) – Hearing Grace’s affectionate intonation as she scolds, “Oh, Ed!” is enough to illustrate that this working relationship is more husband/wife than ordinary principal/secretary.

Roz Doyle and Frasier Crane (”Frasier”) – Their love/hate chemistry is straight out of a Hepburn/Grant screwball comedy, but even after one regrettable romantic encounter, they manage to keep their relationship professional.

Waylon Smithers and Mr. Burns (”The Simpsons”) – Smithers’ unending devotion and unrequited adoration for his boss is as heartfelt – and heartbreaking – as any great romance.

Dwight Schrute and Michael Scott (”The Office”) – An obvious choice, I know, but how can I leave out the live action version of Smithers and Mr. Burns?

Andy Sachs and Miranda Priestly (”The Devil Wears Prada”) – It was a long, painful courtship, but Andy eventually won at least the respect (little though it was) of the complicated, career-focused Miranda. But like the nerd and the head cheerleader, societal pressures and personal prejudices would forever keep them from finding happiness together, and they eventually parted ways.

Tony Stark and Pepper Potts (”Iron Man”) – Although billionaire playboy Tony and his assistant, Pepper, have obvious feelings for one another, fear of ruining their professional and personal relationship kept them apart.

Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy (”30 Rock”) – A modern-day Mary Richards and Lou Grant, these two enjoy a tempestuous workplace relationship: When they fight, it’s bad, but when they make up, it’s soooo good.

We’ll miss all the leather.) I started thinking about who I’d hire as my own apprentice and why they’d make better-or-just-as-good business partners than the current cast candidates. So in no particular order, I give you my top 10 list:

Tina Fey – The “30 Rock” creator and Second City alum has the razor-sharp wit and improvisational skills that are just as big of an asset in the business world as they are on stage.

Malcolm Gladwell – Simply because I’d read anything from the best-selling author of Blink, The Tipping Point and Outliers – including a fax cover sheet.

Sarah Vowell – Ditto for this best-selling author, This American Life contributor and self-professed history buff. And really, you never know when random John Wilkes Booth trivia will come in handy.

Lisa Ling – Not only could the National Geographic Explorer host bring a diverse range of experiences and ideas to the table, thanks to her extensive travels, but with a personal mission to “raise consciousness about issues and stories that don’t always make the headlines,” she could help any company increase and stay true to its social responsibility.

Paula Deen – The Food Network chef no doubt has business acumen – she founded the renowned Lady and Sons restaurant in her home state of Georgia. Plus, her generous use of fat- and calorie-laden ingredients shows that she’s not one to skimp if it means delivering less than the best (tasting) offerings. And I guess it wouldn’t suck to have her around for the next company potluck, either.

Madonna – Whatever your opinion of her talent, there’s no denying her innovation, business-savvy, and ability to market herself. How else could she have maintained pop culture relevance for the past 25 years?

Tim Gunn – Sure, I’d probably need to keep a dictionary on hand for our one-on-ones, but I could rest assured knowing Bravo’s “Project Runway” star and “Guide to Style” host would never deliver anything but the highest-quality products to his clients and customers. Bonus: I’ll have the best-dressed office in town.

Rodney Yee – The renowned yoga guru could lead the team in regular hatha sessions to reduce stress, improve concentration, and increase productivity, among other potential benefits.

Mike Tomlin – Talk about a whiz kid: On February 1, Tomlin became the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl. I’d be willing to bet the hard work and team-building skills that led to his success on the field would bode well for him in the business world, as well.

Oprah – Take it from Dr. Phil, Barack Obama and half of the past decade’s New York Times‘ best-selling authors: You always always want Oprah on your team. (Just make sure you also have a spot open for Gayle.)

Who’s on your list?

Well, we’ve made our favorite koala (Is he British? Is he Australian? We don’t really know) into a minor celebrity and put his likeness on some limited-edition T-shirts. This is where you come in.

We want to know what you’re doing in the face of our current recession. There’s been a heap of negativity in the media lately, and we (as we suspect you do too) want to hear about the good things going on in businesses across the nation and around the world. Do you have a story to share about something your business has learned recently? A way that you’ve become more innovative? A great thing you’re doing to lift employee morale?

Share in the comments section below and tell us about it. What’s in it for you, you ask? Possibly one of these:

We will accept comments through Friday, Feb. 27th – and we’ll randomly pick 10 winners to score a free T-shirt.

Eager to develop a deeper relationship with our beloved coffee-drinking, eucalyptus-munching friend? Become a friend of the CareerBuilder Koala on Facebook or purchase your own Koala gear.

The jokes that fly between you and your BFF don’t always translate well between 9 and 5. And the brutal honesty you share with your friends (”Why are you dating that loser?” “That shirt makes you look like my grandmother.” “Really, a little Listerine goes a long way.”) won’t earn you any new work friends. It might even get you fired.

Never fear! Bring some fun into the workplace thanks to CareerBuilder.com’s new interactive campaign, Anonymous Tip Giver. Just don’t get too carried away. Remember, not everyone shares your sense of humor.

Just go to the site, pick a fun character to use a the visual, decide whom you want to not-so-gently give a tip to, and hit send. You can tell your co-workers or your boss that their make-up could be toned down a bit or that their cologne has been giving you asthma for years now. Or you can pick from a pre-made list of tips like, “One out of 10 people think your barking dog ring tone is funny, that one person is you.”

Have fun with friends, colleagues, family, and co-workers! Let us know if you come up with any good tips to share with our readers.

The ad marks the launch of CareerBuilder.com’s new 2009 marketing campaign – and it’s definitely representative of our off-beat humor. (Yes, humor. Down economy or not, the fact remains that many companies are still hiring right now – and Super Bowl viewers still want to be entertained).

Anyhoo, whether or not it’s your cup of tea, the ads are doing something right: In the three months following its Super Bowl advertising last year, CareerBuilder.com saw significant surges in job seeker traffic and behavior – including a 68 percent increase in job applications. But of course…I want to hear what you think.

If you’re, like me, feeling a little cabin fever-y because it’s three $%@ing degrees out where you are, too – or you’re simply restless due to the upcoming holiday weekend…here’s one more Monday/fun-day item for you.

Yesterday’s featured item from MSN Careers – the “10 Worst Employees of 2008” – summarizes news stories, from around the country and throughout the year, of employees whose antics put Tracy Jordan to shame. Check it out and keep in mind that, as much as you might dread holding your annual employee performance reviews, you could have it worse….

Be thankful you’re not the manager of the Illinois bartender who was suspended for serving drinks in her birthday suit…or of the coroner from Georgia who stole $325 in gift cards from a deceased woman (classy). Then again…Think you can beat these stories? Be my guest.
